BYU women’s soccer sets attendance record in shutout of Nebraska

BYU moved to 2-0 on the young seasons with a shutout of the Huskers in front of a packed house.

There was a buzz on BYU’s campus the Saturday before classes started, and it wasn’t for the upcoming football season.

The Cougar women’s soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season with a resounding 3-0 win over Nebraska in front of 5,108 fans — an all-time record attendance mark at South Field. Elena Medeiros, Cloee Colohan and Marissa Nimmer each had a goal, and goalkeeper Erica Owens made four saves to mark BYU’s 100th shutout in program history.

The freshman Medeiros scored her first career goal to break the ice in the 41st minute, finishing a cross by Niki Fernandes with a header to the near post after feeding Fernandes near midfield. Colohan added a goal just over 10 minutes later on a free kick by Colette Jepson Smith, and the sophomore Nimmer finished the scoring in the 86th minute with a goal.

The sixth-ranked Cougars earned their first shutout of the year in the victory.

At the time of this writing, BYU is tied 2-2 with Louisiana State (2-0-1) at halftime on its first road trip of the year.

The Lady Cougars return home to host rival Utah on Friday at 7 p.m. in a Deseret Duel matchup — a chance to avenge the only regular-season loss for last year’s Elite Eight squad.

BYU won Monday 4-2, outshot LSU 28-7. Looks like it’s going to be another great season.
