Nick Kurtz true to word, officially a Cougar

BYU added more football talent, finalizing verbal commitments of Nick Kurtz and Michael Shelton.

If you’re a BYU football recruiting beatnik (and even if you aren’t), you’ve no doubt heard about Grossmont College wide receiver Nick Kurtz.

As first reported by Loyal Cougars following an offer from USC, the 6-foot-6, 205-pound wide out stayed true to his word and signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday morning, and BYU responded with immediate verification of its reception. The four-star prospect Kurtz was the No. 22 overall junior college prospect in the nation, according to Rivals.com, and also rated as the No. 4 option at wide receiver from the JUCO ranks.

Kurtz racked up 1,301 yards and 18 touchdowns at Grossmont, where he starred in a pass-first system for two years. The soon-to-be junior adds 4.5 speed to BYU’s receiving ranks, and becomes the second 6-foot-6 target for quarterback Taysom Hill (after WR Mitch Mathews).

Kurtz reportedly turned down offers from Oregon, LSU and USC to attend BYU. He is enrolled for January and will be practicing in spring ball.

Also, he apparently likes paintball, which played into his commitment to the Cougars.

BYU also announced the signing of defensive back Michael Shelton from Wakefield High School in Raleign, N.C. The 5-foot-8 speedster recorded a 4.43 40-yard dash to go along with his three interceptions in his final year of high school.

But most importantly, this happened, courtesy of BYU’s director of player personnel Geoff Martzen:

Welker did not immediately return comment.
