TEAM-BY-TEAM PROFILES: WARMING UP FOR MAUI

The opening stretch of games begins with a showcase, a scrimmage, exhibitions, and three home contests.

Last year, BYU debuted a new showcase event with a skills competition, three-point shootout, and dunk contest. Dubbed Boomshakalaka after the NBA Jam catchphrase, it was entertaining and definitely worth doing again. A packed Smith Fieldhouse made for a great event both in person and for BYUtv. Last season, it was held on the Friday before Cougar Tipoff — this time that would fall on Oct. 24, a night when the football team is on ESPN at Boise State. I’d expect the best night for it would be the following night on Saturday, Oct. 25.

COUGAR TIPOFF – October 29
The Wednesday night scrimmage will give BYU fans their first look at this year’s team in full-court action, including guys like transfer Jamal Aytes and freshmen like Dalton Nixon. The scrimmage will likely air on BYUtv.

EXHIBITIONS – Sat. November 1 and Sat. November 8
BYU will likely play host to a pair of Division II, Division III, or NAIA schools. You will witness the massacres on BYUtv. (BYU football plays in the afternoon on Nov. 1 and byes on Nov. 8.)

Lots of BYU fans have heard about SVU. Why? The school is a private liberal arts college that is aimed at serving Latter Day Saints and others with similar values. Former BYU football player and graduate assistant coach Jason Walker was just named SVU’s football coach.
