Cougars add Johnston, Pingree to roster

Even after the early practice guidelines afforded by new NCAA regulations, BYU basketball coach Dave Rose wasn’t finished finalizing his roster until the middle of October.

The roster burgeoned Tuesday.

The Cougars added true freshman Graham Pingree and sophomore Andrew Johnston to the game day roster for the 2013-14 season. Both players will take walk-on status for the year.

Pingree, a mission-bound, 235-pound post player from Cherry Creek High School (Colo.), will provide some depth and cover to the Cougars’ already thin front court. The forward averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in high school while helping Cherry Creek to a 14-12 record. The second-team all-conference award winner plans to serve a mission in May 2014.

Johnston, a sophomore, recently returned from an LDS mission to Osorno, Chile, and will add to BYU’s backcourt. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard earned Region IX MVP honors while playing for Snow Canyon High School (Utah) as a senior. Johnston also totaled four interceptions for the Warriors’ football team, and has a sister who plays volleyball at Charleston-Beckley, a Division-II school in Charleston, West Virginia.

The new additions bring BYU’s active roster to 13 players. Rose also took Tuesday to name team captains for the 2013-14 season. Point guard Matt Carlino, leading scorer Tyler Haws and recently returned mission Kyle Collinsworth won captain honors this year.
