Who will sign with BYU on Wednesday?

Uncommitted Prospect Predictions

JJ Nwigwe, OT, 6’2″, 260-lb, Rockwall-Heath HS, Rockwall, TX: Coach Holliday’s Texas connections led BYU to offer Nwigwe in December 2014. BYU needs depth on the offensive line, and J.J. is a great candidate to provide that. Coach Mendenhall visited him at home last week and J.J. will be in Provo this weekend to get his first look at BYU. Initially under the radar, Nwigwe now holds offers from SMU, Navy, NMSU, Nevada, Kansas, and Cal. Likelihood of signing with BYU: 75% ♦ Prediction: BYU

Trevor Brent, CB, 5’10”, 165-lb, West Mesquite HS, Mesquite, TX: Another non-LDS recruit from Texas, Brent was offered by Cougar coaches in November 2014. As recently as last month, Trevor listed BYU as his first choice. He also holds offers from Boise State and Yale. Likelihood of signing with BYU: 75% ♦ Prediction: BYU

Zach Hoyt, C, 6’5″, 275-lb, Salem HS, Salem, VA: Hoyt has been recruited by Coach Tujague and was also offered last November. BYU pulled out all the stops last week and sent Coaches Mendenhall, Anae, and Tujague to visit him at home. BYU was the first to offer Zach, but he’s another recruit getting late attention, having since received offers from Pitt and Virginia Tech. Likelihood of signing with BYU: 75% ♦ Prediction: BYU

Jacob Jimenez, OT, 6’5″, 265-lb, Pflugerville HS, Pflugerville, TX: Jimenez would be an excellent addition to the BYU offensive line. He committed to Oregon State under Coach Mike Riley in July 2014, but has not felt the same connection to the new coaching staff. Coach Mendenhall and Coach Tujague paid him a visit at home last Friday and BYU should have a good chance to flip him on Signing Day. Likelihood of signing with BYU: 85% ♦ Prediction: BYU

Khari Vanderbilt, DB, 6’2″, 187-lb, San Jose City College, San Jose, CA: Vanderbilt was offered by BYU last June and accepted the offer on the spot. His interest in BYU has steadily declined since and he is currently considered a “Soft Verbal” at best. His visit to Utah State, friendship with Dallin Leavitt, and recent silence re: BYU don’t make me feel good about the chances of holding onto him for this class. His decision probably comes down to Utah State or BYU. If Khari actually does make the trip to Provo this weekend, the chances improve. But, as of now, I don’t like where BYU sits. Likelihood of signing with BYU: 35% ♦ Prediction: Utah State

Mika Tafua, OLB, 6’3″, 208-lb, Kamehameha HS, Laie, HI: Tafua committed to BYU way back in the summer of 2012, but as of last summer considered himself a soft verbal. There doesn’t seem to be any public word on how Mika felt about his official visit to BYU last weekend, but Pac-12 school including USC, Oregon, and Washington have been putting on the pressure of late. I see Tafua honoring his original commitment to BYU, but it’s not a slam-dunk by any means. Likelihood of signing with BYU: 50% ♦ Prediction: BYU

Mufi Hunt, DE, 6’6″, 215-lb, Taylorsville HS, Murray, UT: Hunt is unquestionably one of the top remaining targets for the BYU coaching staff and it showed last week as BYU sent three of its best recruiters to visit him: Bronco Mendenhall, Mark Atuaia, and Kelly Poppinga. His final Top 4 is listed as Michigan State, Washington State, BYU, and Oregon State. The battle appears to be fairly wide open, but I can’t overstate how huge it is that BYU will be his final impression before making his decision. I believe it gives the Cougars a slightly better than average chance at signing Hunt. Likelihood of signing with BYU: 40% ♦ Prediction: BYU

Gabe Reid, DE, 6’0″, 208-lb, Timpview HS, Provo, UT: Reid would be a huge pickup for BYU, but it doesn’t seem likely at this point. He has listed a Top 5 of BYU, Utah, Utah State, Washington, and Stanford. Gabe has always seemed to favor Stanford and the recent commitment of Timpview teammate Britain Covey to Utah further hurts BYU’s chances. It hurts to lose a legacy recruit such as Reid, but it hurts a little less when it’s to a solid program like Stanford. At least BYU will have one final chance to make a good impression this weekend. Likelihood of signing with BYU: 15% ♦ Prediction: Stanford

Dayan Lake, CB, 5’11”, 185-lb, Northridge HS, Layton, UT: Lake was one of the first commitments of BYU’s 2015 recruiting class. The announcement of his recent de-commitment was a big blow for Cougar nation, especially considering Lake had been one of the biggest virtual cheerleaders/recruiters of this class. BYU’s competition for his NLI at this stage seems to be UNLV and San Diego State. I still think BYU is in a good position with Lake, considering the competition and BYU’s opportunity to make a final pitch in Cougartown this weekend. Likelihood of signing with BYU: 70% ♦ Prediction: BYU

Right now it doesn’t appear we have a choice!
